Bob Huggins, WV basketball coach, uses gay slur during radio interview

If he had used " nigger" instead of " fag" he would have been fired immediately. Of course, it was on neo-Nazi Bill Cunningham's radio show.

If his boss, West Virginia athletics director Wren Baker, went on a radio show and said the highly offensive, homophobic things Huggins said Monday, he would be fired before nightfall.

If Baker’s boss, West Virginia president Gordon Gee, had said those things, his tenure would also be over in the blink of an eye.

Heck, if a public-facing employee or executive of any American company said those things, we all know what would happen.

Why would anyone hold a basketball coach to a different standard?

In times like this, the most fervent defenders of a high-profile person will point to the good they’ve done in their life, as if somehow that gives them immunity from any mistake. That’s not the way things work. Every person contains multitudes of good and bad qualities, but we all have to live by certain standards.

Huggins didn't just go over that line, he did it with his full chest out, as if that phrase were second nature. As much progress as the LGBTQ community has made, what Huggins said shows that there’s still a segment of our population that thinks they exist to be the butt of jokes, because they are inherently lesser than the kind of people Huggins believes are worthy of his respect.

If West Virginia retains Huggins, its message to LGBTQ students or citizens of the state would be undeniable: The basketball coach thinks your very existence is funny and to be made fun of. How can anyone in a position of power at West Virginia accept that?

Huggins has always been a horrible human. But does anyone in West Viriginia really care? All they care about is whether or not he gets the team to the NCAAs.

Horrible right wing state filled with horrible right wing assholes. Huggins will, at best, be reprimanded. At worst, nothing.

The thing about Bob Huggins using — and these are his words now — a “completely insensitive and abhorrent phrase that there is simply no excuse for” is that it had to come from somewhere. That somewhere is in the forefront of Huggins’s mind. He wanted to make fun of students from an old rival, the Jesuit school Xavier University, and the way to crack a joke that leaped into his 69-year-old brain was to blanket them with an anti-gay slur. Hysterical.

What Huggins’s employer, West Virginia University, does with its men’s basketball coach after Huggins revealed himself as a homophobe on a Cincinnati radio show Monday is almost secondary. He is exposed for who he is, because in what the hosts were framing as a casual discussion about transfers, Huggins grabbed hold of the conversation and took it directly in an indefensible direction. The audio has a strong it’s-just-us-guys-here vibe to it, and we know the humor just us guys enjoy when the doors are closed, right?

“What it was was all those f-gs, those Catholic f-gs, I think,” he said. There was an awkward pause before Huggins said, “They were envious they didn’t have one.”

Laughter ensued.

Decision is that Huggins is not going to be fired. after all, he led the team to the NCAA tournament and merely slurred gay people. It isn't as if he insulted blacks.
